An insight

Some impressions

With the completion of both bridgehead buildings on Linz's Hauptplatz, not only did the University of Arts Linz itself receive a new home, but also the associated university library. At the beginning of the 2019/20 winter semester, the library moved from its Urfahr location to the new, approximately 1,000 square metre premises in the West Bridgehead Building at Hauptplatz 8.

The comprehensive collection of literature is not only reserved for students of the University of Arts Linz, but is also open to the public. With a total area of around 1,000 square metres, the university library extends over two floors, with the entrance on the first floor. Almost the entire book collection is now freely accessible: thematic open access on the first floor, stacks by serial number on the second floor.

A total of 30 work and reading places are available in the new premises. In addition, a living room with current magazines and daily newspapers as well as a children's corner with age-appropriate literature. A special highlight is the exhibition room for the collection of seating furniture by Austrian architect Johannes Spalt. From African stools to English folding chairs, bentwood chairs by Thonet to Johannes Spalt's own models, the collection can now be presented to the general public for the first time.

The collection policy of the University Library is strongly oriented towards the current range of studies at the University of Arts Linz and places the temporal focus on art and cultural production of the 20th and 21st centuries. Visual arts, applied arts, media art, industrial design, architecture, media theory, art history, cultural studies, gender studies and art education are among the focal points of new acquisitions. A comprehensive range of around 200 ongoing journal subscriptions provides a generous overview of current trends in contemporary art and cultural production.
